Paul Reynolds has been managing in-house lawyers for almost 20 years. He has selected counsel for over US$ 70 million in legal fees using a range of firms in Canada and Asia-Pacific. He founded three legal departments and converted two others into profit centres for their companies - a rare distinction in the corporate world. He is a practicing lawyer and a member of the bar in England, New York and Hong Kong. Paul began his career as a professor of law in England and the United States and then went into private practice with Fulbrght & Jaworski and Coudert Brothers. He has served as a senior executive for a leading non-governmental organization, written three books and published over 20 articles. ( Bibliography)
Corporate Counsel Experience. Following a position as Chief Legal Counsel to Toronto property developers, Reichmann International, Paul spent six years as general counsel in Asia-Pacific for Southern Company (now Mirant) and three years as General Counsel for Hong Kong's largest utility, China Light & Power.
Transactional Experience. Paul has extensive experience in banking, international finance, commercial transactions and litigation. He has negotiated the acquisition and sale of many companies and the related financing, numerous joint ventures, long-term government contracts, construction contracts and lobbying with government agencies. He has advised on foreign direct investment, initial public offerings, corporate governance and energy supply agreements.
Industry Experience. Paul has worked for several years each in the following industry sectors: Construction, Property, Energy, Banking, Urban Planning, Manufacturing and Hotels. He was a senior executive of an international non-profit organization for six years.
Marketing of Legal Services. Both China Light and Mirant were the target of massive amounts of marketing by law firms in Hong Kong, Australia and elsewhere in Asia-Pacific. As the recipient of marketing and the main decision-maker on selecting counsel, Paul observed how a few firms distinguished themselves or differentiated their practice (while most committed an appalling waste of effort). He saw that most firms that did well often failed to market themselves for further work - they gained insights into the client but failed to proactively use these to propose added value service. Every client relationship management (CRM) meeting with international and local firms was at Paul's request, indicating they failed to see that existing clients should be the best prospects for new business.
Preventative Law through Compliance. Throughout his career, Paul has led preventative law efforts by establishing compliance and governance programs in several common law and civil law jurisdictions. His compliance experience included policy creation in diverse jurisdictions with cultural barriers and joint venture partners. He has executed or managed compliance investigations and compliance audits, trained compliance managers, implemented Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and lectured to other in-house counsel on establishing and developing compliance programs.
